I tried this principal in both maxwell and vray and had no success so maybe some of you guys can suggest something. Just out of curiosity I want to get the discoball effect by shining emmitters onto the super reflective mirror surface. This is the effect Im after:

Here is what I get when shining emmiters on to my discoball:

Scene is here if anyone is willing to try:

its just reflective lighitng so even without caustics it will show up, I tried this before not with disco ball but as a "poice light". Wont hurt to keep casutics on will just amp reflective throughtout samples.
so the problems your getting probably arnt caustic related.
But be sure to make your emmiter sphere in your flashlight, as low poly as possible, I usually use 2 planes back to back(4 triangles), or 2 triangle faces back to back. less triangles emmiter is maped to = cleaner quiker.

Can't let it render longer for tonight, but this is my result at 7 samples, based on Olitech technique :D

If you model the mirror pieces and place color emitters it would be closer to original.
This is just a post hue animation but I will post a hi-res and a rotating-anim soon.

Tom : how did you obtain these "non square" effects?

Thank you Hervé, Mane, Mihai, Frances and def4d :D
Non-square reflections comes from shape of the spot light.
You have to model the lightspot with a reflector inside
as described in the first page to focus the beams.
