Sometimes my interiors seem to be a little (or a lot) washed out because of too high automatic bounce settings

I think its a really great idea to have auto bounces but sometimes i think the human makes a better judge than the computer and for certain scenes less bounces would be satisfactory

So i dont want to get rid of the auto settings just to have an option to override it if one wished

I second that.
It would be nice see the human eye "imperfection" in my own renders.

I don't think so.
Did you try lowering ISO or shutterspeed, or increasing the Fstop?

Guessing the bounces appropriate for a scene is pretty much impossible.
The way the automatism for the bounces probably works, is to check after each bounce, how much energy the ray still has got and if it falls below a certain level then the bounces stop. It might be useful to be able to set this threshold value.

I don't think it is a good system.... why... see here...

why...? coz if the engine decides it needs 100 bounces... well that might be a real drag... good I'm sure... , but exploded render times...

besides I want to be able to decide myself how many bounces I need or want...

perhaps I'm not understanding things, but doesn't reflectance affect the amount of light that bounces, AND the number of bounces?

It looks to me that you can exactly control how much light gets bounced around in a scene by controlling the luminance of a colour.
