Cool Modo 401 on display 8)
I love the smell of Nehalems in the morning, and the new Mac Pro adds the new Xeon Processors up to 2.93 GHz, new memory architecture, and graphic options for less money than before.
time to order...?

great goal for the NL marketing!

P.
AND they claim 1.7x speed increase, so if those numbers are to be believed:

According to the benchwell site, atdesign's Mac Pro (the one referenced) took 8 mins to render. So now, it takes ~ 4 mins 40 sec apparently with a 2.9 GHZ 8-core Mac Pro.... not bad!

hmm ... over all a great upgrade. I had the hope that they would be a bit cheaper ...
Now I'll have to decide between the quadcore with 2.93 Ghz or the 8-Core with 2.26 Ghz.

2.93 GHZ 16 = 46.88 GHZ
3.20 GHZ x 8 = 25.60 GHZ

46.88 = 183 %
25.60 = 100 %

Amazing but true.

And you are right about the benchwell time about 4 minuts. This XEONS should be available in 3 to 4 weeks with dell and BOXXTECH. Also RAM would be faster (same as i7 processors) and cheaper

am going to order the lower 8 core i think and will add 3d party memory ( wonder why apple is selling those that expensive its just nuts)...
How much should we expect the benchwell test to be? 2000? above?

other question is: how much ram is enough ( we rarely output files bigger than 3500 pixels but use multilight a lot..)?

just ordered the octo 2.66 with 8 gb of ram ( will add 8 more to reach 16)..
Will run the test as soon as i get my hand on the machine ( 3 weeks expected waiting time)..

Question: Since i am maybe gonna run some files under Windows version of MR, i understand i need a 64 bit version of XP...can someone guide me on how/what to install for efficient win system?

thnx

With BOOT CAMP, that's the way to go. Do not try using parallels and If possible install Vista 64 there is a better support with APPLE HArdware for the 64 bit of vista. We just ordered one octo too. 2.66 w/16 we did not like the graphic cards that are available we hope to be able to uprade that part later.

bootcamp seems also the best solution...shall i wait for the future replacement of vista 64...what is wrong with the graphic card? We are doing almost no openGL stuff ( sketchup mostly) so the actual card is ok for us.

bootcamp is very easy and very stable (it's not emulation)
I have Vista Business 64 running with no issues beyond the normal MS issues
