Yes. I was one of those 'gazillion' GI's wandering around, looking totally lost and in culture shock! Unfortunately, the little time I had off was only spent in Itaewan, which I know is not even close to the real Korea. I was pretty young back then, and not very confident in myself to really explore. For me, it would be like taking someone who grew up in a fishing village on Chejudo and dropping them in the middle of New York City.

But I did have a ton of fun hanging out with the Korean soldiers who worked with our unit. Man, those guys got me soooo messed up drinking soju! I could never keep up...

One thing that I miss the most is decent kimchee. I'd kill for some right now! Currently, I'm stationed in South America (though I'm no longer in the Army), and I have yet to find a Korean restaruant in this country (they don't like spicy food here). I'm almost tempted to try to make my own....... Got any good recepies? 8)

I'd love to, but from where I am now, It would cost way to much to fly, plus it would be almost a full day or more on an airplane - each way. I'm supposed to be reassigned within the next six months back to the U.S. - where it will be easier (and cheaper) to go to Korea on a vacation. The only hard part would be to decide what to see...

Thanks begpeg for your comment. :D

and Michael, I'm pleased that you have a reminiscence about korea. :D

But, I'm very sad for my poor english to talk to you.

You're right. Itawon is not close to the real korea. And 80's and current korea is quite different.

Kimchee is one of my favorite food, especially mellow kimchee is vicious. :P

And if you visit korea again, I hope you have a pleasant trip. :D :D
