The system price quote we got was from Boxx, and yes I'll admit that they are more expensive than alienware or really any other system manufacturer I've seen. The reason we are going with Boxx is they are a local company and we've already purchased several of their systems and have been very happy.
Mihai, you keep saying that I can get 2 or 3 Xeon systems for the same price as one AMD. This maybe be true but what will I do with them, coop rendering doesn’t work and who knows when it will. It will be at least October until we see whether or not NL will release Maxwell 1.0 and even then coop may not work properly. I've already got 115 render slaves so I don't need any more, and if I bought them they would just sit in the box not doing anyone any good for months. Also your point that I shouldn’t be interested in processor speed shocked me.
I don't know if you know this but the graphics card has no impact on rendering speed, and if your using your hard drive to render then your performance is going to suck anyway. In the computer rendering world there are two things that make a difference when rendering, CPU speed and Memory! Your right that when working with large files hard drive access is crucial, but once it's loaded in memory and if you have enough of it the hard drive plays little if no part in the rendering process. When comparing system to system the AMD is faster and no one can deny that. If you can render a Maxwell scene 25% faster than the other guy, how much time does that save you and how much money do you save by saving time? I understand the coop rendering idea but I'm not talking about network rendering here I'm talking about one single systems performance over another, and 25% makes a difference to me.
