The system price quote we got was from Boxx, and yes I'll admit that they are more expensive than alienware or really any other system manufacturer I've seen. The reason we are going with Boxx is they are a local company and we've already purchased several of their systems and have been very happy.

Mihai, you keep saying that I can get 2 or 3 Xeon systems for the same price as one AMD. This maybe be true but what will I do with them, coop rendering doesn’t work and who knows when it will. It will be at least October until we see whether or not NL will release Maxwell 1.0 and even then coop may not work properly. I've already got 115 render slaves so I don't need any more, and if I bought them they would just sit in the box not doing anyone any good for months. Also your point that I shouldn’t be interested in processor speed shocked me. I don't know if you know this but the graphics card has no impact on rendering speed, and if your using your hard drive to render then your performance is going to suck anyway. In the computer rendering world there are two things that make a difference when rendering, CPU speed and Memory! Your right that when working with large files hard drive access is crucial, but once it's loaded in memory and if you have enough of it the hard drive plays little if no part in the rendering process. When comparing system to system the AMD is faster and no one can deny that. If you can render a Maxwell scene 25% faster than the other guy, how much time does that save you and how much money do you save by saving time? I understand the coop rendering idea but I'm not talking about network rendering here I'm talking about one single systems performance over another, and 25% makes a difference to me.

Maxer, what I ment was that if this is going to be your workstation computer, then you shouldn't be doing your rendering on it anyway. This is your work computer, you need to be using it constantly, so what you are interested in is getting the fastest possible interaction with this system.

Believe me you will notice a huge improvement with that Raptor setup, not just reading/writing files, but every app you open, everything you do on the computer will seem much smoother, because almost every action you do needs to either read or write from the hd's. And the speed increase will have nothing to do with the cpu's....
One note though if you use two Rapotrs in Raid 0 make sure you have a third disk only for backup purposes.

You have too much money :P

Good point :)

One of the reasons my company decided to purchase high end systems for me was the amount of time I just sat and waited during the day while I was working. During the course of a day I was waiting about 2 hours total for the computer to render out a scene so I could look at it make my adjustments and then render again. At the time I was using Max radiosity which was very time consuming. After that experience we decided to look to other options and we decided to go with Final Render which used distributed rendering to speed up rendering. It could use up to 5 dual processor computers to render out a single image, (hopefully the way coop rendering will work some day) and we set up a system to work in this way. Even with that my main work station needed to be faster than the slaves because it was controlling the other machines and as a result needed more resources. Maxwell will change the way I work but I don't see us getting rid of Final Render until Maxwell has matured past where it is today. I would like to have a Raptor setup, maybe on the next system I'll give it a try!

So I guess no one has used Maxwell with a dual core system yet?

I have!!! I actually own a Boxx Workstation with Dual AMD Opteron 275 Dual Cores and 8 gb ram. The thing is crazy fast and the task manager shows all 4 "cpu's" pegged at 100%!!!

BTW, using both Maya and Max with Maxwell Plug's.

Forgot to mention, Maxwell's scene information shows 4 cpu's - not sure what that does for the licensing issues?

Yes I am using Windoz..... and no, it cannot (Maxwell has done a great job with super high poly counts however) - I have the 3gb switch enabled and that's all XP Pro sees and uses.

However I also have XP64 as a dual boot - unfortunatley the only thing I am running on that (for now) is LightWave's 64 bit build. Have not tried the Maxwell plugin for LightWave yet - but will as soon as this project is over!

I should add that I am also running a dual 2.7ghz G5 with 8gb of Ram and Maxwell (through LightWave). The Mac does take advantage of all 8gb (which I have yet to hit) And Maxwell does quite well on this environment. Maxwell only sees 2 CPU but uses 4 threads. Not quite as fast as the Opteron system, but still performs well - better than I thought.

I have noticed also, that Maya runs better (more stable, as fast if not faster than my Opteron, better memory mangement ect...) on my Mac than on my Opteron. Maybe it has something to do with all the pixar people being on Maya for the Mac. In anycase this was not expected - but is welcomed for sure!
