well, Maxwell drives CPU's to high temp, running hours and days on 100%. however I finally understood why sometimes my AMD will go all the way up to 90+ Celsius and why sometimes it will run in the 70's.... and it's displacement. An interior scene with displaced carpet will drive the heat to 90 while if displacement if off, it stays "cool" in the 70's....

Good observation. I'd noticed something similar as well when using displacement for external splitface blockwork. I use Core Temp https://www.alcpu.com/CoreTemp/ for monitoring the highs and lows and displacement sees me getting a desktop fan onto the side of the workstation ~!

I would guess that the displacement part of the code is activating a different part of the processor such as AVX instructions.

V-ray runs even hotter than Maxwell under most usage scenarios.

also, having a clip-mapped material can cause hotter renders. not just a tree or two, more like perforated cladding panels etc.
