I rendered on two separate machines th same MXI, Now when i want to merge them, I get the warning that they have the same CPU Id, and cannot merge.

Did I 'cook in' the same noise distributioon on each or can i modify directly the number and get a useful mergre from these two files?

If i cannot, then I need to resume on erender and start again on the other machine - so in order to not repeat the error, how do I know what number to put in the CPU Id? Instructions for this process much appreciated.

Yes, that means that you have the same noise distribution on both files, and merging them would be as having any of them, not better. You can manually set the cpu id in maxwel render, it's just below the multilight option in scene section on render panel.
