Just an idea
If you try import mxs file with a plugin ( 3dsmax for example )
Than export it in other machine where 3.1 installed

Thanks for your idea.

Unfortunately, there are no plug-ins for the softwares in use (I use MR studio) and I'm in one country and the recipients (students) are in another, too far away; I intended to email the MXMs they need but they are on an older version of MR : (

Students can use student version of 3dsmax
Importing mxs file and saving the scene as max file than export it with all materials with old plugin. i think it work
But why he don't update v3.1 to 3.2? It's free

I can't order the universities into upgrading. Students cannot install software by themselves. I thought there was a way to save materials and scenes for older version users, but it looks like there isn't. Maybe I do screenshots of each material incl. textures used and do it "on foot" ; )

If there is some pattern to how they're constructed, you could write a python script that would create the mxm files from scratch using the version of pymaxwell they have installed. Or you could download an older version and recreate the materials (and/or check whether you may still have some .mxs files that are older, and contain some of these materials).

Students can explain the case to their university and update maxwell to the last v3 version

There you can download 3.1.99.11. You should have problems to have both 3.1 and 3.2 working on the same machine (different folders) with the same license. (as for maxwell).

Anyway you should use pymaxwell to make mxms even without license.
