as in the previous version, i guess it is not possible to run the v3 plugin alongside a v2 installation?

Correct, the plugin version must match the version of Maxwell, especially after version 2.7-ish, since plugins from that point on have dependencies on .mxx extensions (grass, subdivision, sea, material types, etc) located in MAXWELL_ROOT.

thanks! just to make sure:

i can not render with v3 plugin to v2 main engine but i can leave the v2 installation on my machine, and if necessary replace the v3 rhino plugin with a v2 one to restore full v2 functionality.

You can have as many versions of Maxwell Render installed as you like (limited to three being active, since there is only MAXWELL_ROOT, MAXWELL2_ROOT, and MAXWELL3_ROOT). Whichever version of the plugin you have installed at any given time, it will only be interested in checking for, and using, the version of Maxwell it was designed to work with.
