Hi,

from whichever manufacturer I get IES or EULUMDAT data, the Maxwell Fire window renders, but the viewport rendering and the production rendering show quirky black jaggy bars. Has anyone seen this before and knows from whence this occurs? I am using version 2.7.20.0 under Windows 7 Enterprise.

I assigned the "frosted_glass.mxm" (03.06.2011 20:13:28) that comes with MR. Is that no good? I have 3 mm thick Schott DURAN laboratory glass to mimick. It is sandblasted on the outside, and the inside (and bottom and top rims) are not. The glass shape does not intersect with other geometry. There is no light in the scene file, apart from an HDR image and an LED (10 mm sphere, EULUMDAT emitter material, sphere hidden from camera).

What is odd though is that FIRE does render the "frosted_glass.mxm" without the artifacts. When I assign, for example, "Industrial Glass" (from the THINK download site, clear glass with no sandblasting effect or else on it), the black jaggy artifacts do not appear.

Should the "frosted_glass.mxm" no longer be used? Should, for example, a sandblasted version be better derived from the "Industrial Glass" material (adding higher roughness? A bump map? Different attenuation?) that mimicks clear non-sandblasted Schott DURAN laboratory glass rather well?

I think he likely means it would be due to material-related a bug (e.g. see here), in which case you can't really put it in terms of using, or not using, one material or another, since it would instead arise from some particular combination of values (the material system being generic). It looks like something ends up going out of range, and I think I recall seeing a similar pattern once, where it was apparently due to a certain combination of SSS and roughness values. It would probably be best if you could please upload the scene for examination.

In reality, the light's glass (standard sandblasted/etched on the outside, not on the inside) looks like this, when illuminated http://www.atelje-lyktan.se/plug-lamp-bord

If one assigns the default material to all objects, the black artifacts occur also. Similarly, if one assigns the "Industrial Glass" material to the glass part. However, if one does a FIRE and then renders the viewport, occasionally then the viewport rendering shows no black artifacts. Once, however, the camera has been moved, the black artifact reemerge, so one has to fire up FIRE once again. That's very strange behaviour. If the IES sphere with the emitter material is checked to invisible in the object lister, every viewport render and production render works. Therefore, I suspect that the IES emitter material is the culprit, no matter from which manufacturer the EULUMDAT file used is downloaded.

Both "frosted_glass.mxm" and "Industrial Glass" have no additive layers, etc. by the way.

Thanks for the files, I was able to narrow it down to being due to some combination of this particular IES file (well, LDT), and the position of the light. Here is a modified version of the scene, if you would not mind confirming a) that you see the effect occurring upon opening and rendering this file, and b) that you do not see it when swapping in some other IES files (and perhaps you have yet others that do trigger it, which would be interesting as well). Basically, I have removed all of your geometry, to rule that variable out, and replaced it with a couple of planes and a sphere, from the standard Maxwell object library. The modified scene also no longer uses IBL, and only contains a default material, and an IES material, both of which were created from scratch.

The behavior I expect is that upon opening and hitting Render (in Maxwell, not FIRE), you should observe this black bar issue. Next, drag the IES sphere around a bit, such that the lobe is no longer intersecting the planes; by doing this, I am able to prevent the issue, though I can't say precisely, since I did observe it both when there was intersection, and when there was not. I then tried to reproduce it using several of the Maxwell-supplied IES files, and was not able to do so, though I did not check them all (and keeping in mind that it seems to be pretty touchy, so I may just not have put the emitter in a location where the behavior would manifest).

Not sure if/how this will really be helpful to you, but regardless, thanks again for uploading the files.

Hi JD,

thanks for looking at it, much appreciated!

1. If I open your file and click render viewport first thing, the viewport renders without black artifacts. If I then scale and/or move the IES sphere about the scenery, intersecting geometry or not, the viewport always renders without black artifacts.

2. If I load an HDR image for lighting, the IES sphere not in front of the HDR image in the background, the viewport renders without black artifacts.

3. If I then move the camera so the IES sphere is in front of the HDR image background, I get black artifacts.

4. If I then remove the HDR image background, the black artifacts remain.

5. If I then do a FIRE rendering, the next viewport rendering render has no black artifacts. The one after does. The one after too. The one after not.

6. If I set Environment Type to None, the viewport renders completely black, FIRE renders ok (as it always does). All viewport renders remain 100% black.

7. If I use a two year old IES or EULUMDAT file, the viewport rendering is ok in your scene. Opening an old and new IES/EULUMDAT file side by side, I cannot see the difference; the lines and data-structure seem to be the same. In DIALux (light planner software, any EULUMDAT file works, no matter how old or from whatever manufacturer like Osram, Philips, Sharp, Citizen, etc.)

This rendering behaviour does not make sense to me at all, there seems no clear pattern (other than that the "old" IES file works) : (

Is IES lighting broken in the current version, because there has been a new IES and EULUMDAT data-structure been introduced?

I put an "old" and a "new" IES file in the same dropbox folder where you picked up the scene file, so maybe your trained eye can spot the difference in the data-structure that somehow makes MR behave the way it does?

I can't really make any such blanket statements (i.e. IES is/isn't "broken") based on this, I can only tell you what I observe. You uploaded three additional files, all IES; two of them appear to work all the time:
  • ies00028-00_CL-L103-C6N.ies
    ies00031-00_CL-L103-C3N-C.ies
However, use of the third (ies0072-00_CLL030-1206A1-303M1A2_IES_32K.ies) results in Maxwell returning a "Can't read photometric file" error message. In Explorer, I see that the thumbnail plugin also fails to generate a preview for this file (it shows up with a "No Preview" thumbnail), indicating that it is not readable by that instance of the code, either. I assume that this last IES is supposed to be the same light represented by the original ldt0072-00_CLL030-1206A1-303M1A2_Eulumdat_32K.ldt file, which raises a question: were you attempting to use the LDT version because you also received the same error when attempting to use the IES one?

That is the only pattern I see with this set of files: that the IES version of 0072-00_CLL030-1206A1-303M1A2_32K cannot be loaded, and that the LDT version tends to render with artifacts. Would you agree with this, or do you see another factor? I am not necessarily implying that there is something wrong with these two files -- there may or may not be -- I am only saying that from what I see, Maxwell is not getting along with either one.

Why "old" and "new" files work in FIRE and why "FIRING" forces the viewport render to occasionally working renderings is beyond my guess. Maybe you could ask a colleague who programmed the IES/EULUMDAT functionality, what apparently has changed?

I downloaded the files from the manufacturer's website http://ce.citizen.co.jp/lighting_led/en ... index.html once again, just to be sure, put them in the For JD Hill Dropbox folder, and then used them in the MXS provided as before:

The file ldt0072-00_CLL030-1206A1-303M1A2_Eulumdat_32K results in no error in MR reading the file/material preview rendering with no coloured artifacts/FIRE rendering ok/viewport rendering black artifacts/viewport rendering ok when a FIRE rendering has been invoked and the FIRE window is open/viewport rendering black artifacts when camera is moved, but occasionally no black artifacts

In the latter two cases, when I switch IBL to None, the viewport is 100% black, whereas the FIRE preview renders the emitter.

So, yes, because the ies0072-00_CLL030-1206A1-303M1A2_IES_32K file results in black artifacts as well as an erratic IES dots display in the viewport, I then used the EULUMDAT file of the same lamp, hoping that would work better.

Thanks, one more thing then, could you please zip those IES/LDT files -- not the ones on your dropbox, unless you're referencing them from there, but the actual files you're using, where they are actually located on your disk? Reason being: the fact that I see a "Can't read photometric file" dialog here, and you don't there (you say above that you see black artifacts & erratic IES representation in the viewport), implies that the file is being altered in some way as I download it. Zipping (I prefer 7z, which I guess you have, since I used it above) will rule out that possibility.

The original downloads (the IES and the EULUMDAT files that could be faulty or to a new file-format standard), as zipped by the manufacturer, are still in the For JD Hill folder

ps: just a suggestion - wouldn't it be useful (and good marketing) for Next Limit to collaborate with the big lamp manufacturers like http://www.lighting.philips.com/main/co ... nloads.wpd and, not via a plug in, but via download make IES/EULUMDAT files available? After all, the lamps provided in MR's library are, well, superseded by newer FLs, CFLs and LEDs?

Thanks, I'll see if it works differently with the zipped versions. Regarding the IES files included with Maxwell, those are just put in for example, as with the small number of included HDRIs, etc.
