you can also:

> start a render
> open windows task manager
> go to processes
> find maxwell.exe (the one with 100% cpu)
> rightclick on the process > last item in menu: > set affinity

there you can take away cpu cores from the process.

I'm not sure what that processor is. I assume it's got 4 cores? You'll want to use as many cores as you can especially with only a 2ghz speed. So yeah, I'd start with 3 and see if it works before going down further.

I'm not sure which plugin you're using so I can't tell you where to find it there, but in Maxwell Studio if you go to your Render Options tab at the time you've got Time, Sampling Level, Multilight, then CPU Threads (which should say Automatic). Just change it from Automatic to 3.
