Ok, so I've been a Maxwell user for like 2 years now and this thread is always on the top 5 or so of the Gallery. I visit it once a year or so out of shear curiosity. It's a bit like stopping by the same antique mall along your yearly trip to Disney World - you don't think about it all year long but every time you see that sign on the side of the road you're surprised it's still open and you just have to go see it again.

That said, I've just got to ask, what on EARTH is it with all the math models? I can understand a person making a couple for fun tests. Maybe it could even be a serious project for a couple months. But, heavens to Betsy, it never ends! I've looked through many pages (mostly I was scouring for the free math model...I'm not sure I ever quite found it, why on earth isn't it in the first post?).

Every post in this thread is some ho-hum praise or comment on the latest abstract rendering, ignoring the obvious question of WHY??. My goodness, I feel like I'm going mad here. Am I the only one not in the loop? Is there some sane reason why a person would make so many models based on mathematic equations and then render them and then post them on a rendering forum?

Please, I must know what it all means!!!

p.s. nice rendering. i like the one that looks a bit like a shell with the colored background.

Brodie,

i would say this is art. why do artists exist ? this would be your question then.

many artists don´t know if they get ever paid for their job and many do specialize in a certain area of art, like sculting, painting, or the art of maths - as you can see mother natur has some interesting formula to receive beautiful models.
if you look around in flora and fauna and zoom into details of insects, plants, etc. you see many of these maths algorithms as well.

so mabe it is torolfs passion to show all these hidden gems and evolve them even further.

the same thing happens sometimes with scientists. they search and do research and sometimes don´t know where they end up and if this ever will pay off. you could also ask why are they doing this.

but, i think this is in the nature of humans to look for new things or to go where no one has gone before.
the whole world would be a lot poorer if everybody would only do things for reason or a certain purpose (not to say only for profit)

just my point of view
cheers
