I found a 3d model of a tree, and I made 3 variations.... Nothing special for the materials... I just wanted to check the three choises we usually have...
1. Leaves had the correct shape so we use a color
2. Leaves are simple plates and we use clipmaps
3. Leaves are simple plates and we use a color

All images are rendered 10mins using a QuadCore 2.4MHz and rendered from Max Design 2010, latest plugin
Case 1: 143838 Polys
Cases 2 & 3 : 64686 Polys

Case 1 : SL=11.14 Bm=144.55
Image

Case 2 : SL=11.89 Bm=197.06
Image

Case 3 : SL=11.97 Bm=203.10
Image

I will add tests of instances of the above models

The same model rendered using a I7 2.8Ghz

Case 1 : SL=13.26 Bm=343.52

Case 2 : SL=13.80 Bm=429.17

Case 3 : SL=13.93 Bm=451.12

The next test will be a Forest of these...

i think you cannot compare the first with the other two; the size of the leafs is much bigger (and better) thus creating much more shadows and far less light, more surface to calculate > lower benchmarks.

Actually I don't want to compare them... I wanted to see if using clipmaps makes a big difference and it doesn't... (because of the known problem with intersecting clipmaps...)
I know that there is a big difference...
Also, what I learn from these tests is that even if i have big Benchmark differences, the SL difference is not that big and the final result not so different...

Forest images...again 10 min, i7@2.8Ghz
Case1 : A forest made from instances of 3d trees
17404430 polys SL=11.45 Bm=164.55
Image

Case 2 : A forest initially made with Forestpack from itoosoft and then transformed the trees to 3d instances using a 3d tree
52069568 polys Sl=12.00 Bm=159.17
Image

Generally Benchmark doesn't seem important... I am very happy with the results... I will try a much bigger scene...

***There is a problem when I leave Motion blur per object in the last MAX plugin... Max crashes... I have to change it to "none".

I make my own trees, leaves are made of two triangles with clipmap, If the transparent (clipped) area of leaf is larger, rendering is slower.

I don't know, i am using 1.7.1, i think it comes from less geometry visible through transparent polygon, or just less levels of visibility, thanks to smaller holes among leaves, less shadows through holes...

Oh. This is the V2 section. Clipped materials are completely different in V2.

Anyone has to say something about the Motion Blur issue?
Motion blur "per object" -> Max freezes
Motion blur "Off" -> Maxwell starts in 1sec as it should...

Well, I tried it with a smaller scene and it is not a crash, but a terrible delay... See here...
