I share your frustration about the $$$ spent on 8 core xeon...

Imagine the nice i7's (plural) we could have bought with all that $$$.

Same, built a i7 thats 2x faster then my dual quad xeon for 700 bucks when I spent around 5200.00 USD on a damn workstation 2 years ago. I will defiantly be building my systems from now on as I have just done.

Another build I recommend is

Evga Classfied 3x SLI
i7 975 Extreme
Corsair Dominator GT's at 1887 mhz 7-8-7-20 timing
GTX 275
Koolance Liquid cooling external system - Running with a dual loop north and south bridge cooling blocks and cpu cooling block. Exos 2.5 system.
Thermaltake Black widow 850 PSW
200 Gig Raptor WD

OC'd to 4.0 ghz max load at 65 C Max over clock ive reached was 4.9Ghz but the temps were a bit to high under full load but it was perfectly stable.
That being said I feel sorry for those that bought the macpro for a a pretty penny as my system as it is can match them if I increase my cooling with another radiator and cooling loop I can achieve the 4.9 which out benchs a 5k dual quad 16 thread machine.
