however, on second thought, I have complaints. if an exterior is rendered with a physical sky, and the image needs to be tweaked a bit, banding in the sky becomes inevitable, even with slight level modifications.
which forces me to take out the sky and insert my own. which is another unpaid hour of work. (if I am lucky and there are no trees...)

I always save out 32 bit hdr's and if needed, an alpha channel render (for sky swapping).

Wim and Joris, you're absolutely right. I was only describing how it currently works as you ask. :) Of course, we are considering your suggestions.

After skimming through all the posts in this thread again a simple question arrives:

If you are considering to change these things and keeping in mind that maxwell calculated the full garmut then it might be wise to introduce a maxwell RAW that you can import into Photoshop like a hasselblad or nikon RAW.

Just an idea, but actually any possibility to stay in a larger color space (eci-rgb-v2 hint hint :) ) would make me happy!
