i have this pc for 4 years now, been doing my renderings with it. lately when i start my maxwell render it turns off the machine. has anyone experienced this?

quad core
32bit xp pro
4 gig ram

i've tried large and small scenes and all wound up the same.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, that would be idle. Those temps are fairly high. I would say around 75°C under load is within reason. A better airflow in your tower might just solve it.

You might want to consider replacing your cpu heatsink/fan or at least giving them a good dusting and applying new thermal paste.

I have used a leaf-blower in the past with a lot of success... but I'm not an expert! do it at your own risk

62C idle is absurd; even though it's within the 65C manufacturer limit. You shouldn't be that close to the limit.

A CPU with a good cooling solution (and properly ventilated case) should not go over 45C at LOAD. (e.g. currently I get 28C idle and 36C at load).

thomas are you rendering on a VIA eden or so?

36°c at load is odd, imo. I would guess that it is a reading from the mainboard sensor located in the cpu soket, and not the actual die temp measured with something like coretemp

imho 45° idle is ok when max is not above ~63° on permanent load. (for a core2 quad family type processor)

say what quadcore did you get a 4 years ago?

if it is intel check the stupid mountig mechanism of the (boxed) cooler, it has these little plastic grips instead of screws, and it happens that one slips back out if not secured well, and messes up the contact to the cpu surface....

It is definitely the CPU reading. The mainboard sensor has a different reading. I know this system very well. It used to give me 55C at load, but after sitting down and redesigning the air flow in the case and using a proper heatsink on the CPU, it has been brought down quite a bit and never goes beyond 36 (well in the summer when ambient temp goes up to 80F in the room then the CPU stabilizes at 42C while rendering for long hours).

So, yes 36C is quite real !! (at least in the winter ) ... and it is all air cooled.
