After fighting for hours with long long renders on single core machines with 2 gb ram, we are ready to purchase a better machine, under 3000 euros which is our upper limit, that will be dedicated to renders

I was thinking ( we are on XP Sp3 ) that getting a mac would be:
- more stable
- easier to maintain and config

We would use it both with XP and Mac OSX.

Now the choice is: getting smaller octo config with max of third party RAM, not adding HD's and stuff, or getting a bigger octo with less ram? What would you do...?

Thnx

I would tell you not to spare on RAM because you would need a lot of it, so my advice is to go for the smaller config with 4-6 GB RAM at least.

But, if you are not in hurry, the other advice is to wait until early spring, when rumors say that the MacPro line will be upgradedimplementing the new i7 core...benchmarks show it's worth the wait!

I'd wait as well, if you can. I hope for an upgrade on Mac Pros in about 2 to 4 month.
And never buy RAM/Hard discs in the apple store, they cost way too much. Instead: take the lowest RAM/disc configuration and upgrade new hard drives and the RAM yourself!

N.
take a look at the benchwell results... it's worth the wait

No, the as of yet unreleased Xeon version of Core i7. The 7xxx series are for 4+ MP systems.

I´ll go for the Xeon I7, but perhaps not to fast.
September-November 2009 is perhaps the best time, but I can afford to go for it in march.

My best friend work for IBM, and he is in no need of money.
Still he can not deside to take this step, he even teached me all I know with computers.

It´s an oxymoron, so is life.

I agree. This is worth the wait for me. Love to have those i7 based Xeons in an Octo.

I love reading his/her posts. I don't know if he is retarded or a super genius, if his words are random and meaningless or far beyond our understanding.

I find myself searching for the secrets of the universe in his words.
