Please post here anything else (not relating to Maxwell technical matters)

I just have a look on their website, and I am afraid that this time NL are in late to fry...

they annonce "fry swap" and it's a kind of multilight but for materials, one render and you can change the materials unlimited times in real time and keep a photorealistic quality... without to have to re-render the image.
please NL moove, do something, RE-ACT .!!!!!!!

it's a very bad news for us and for maxwell :?

That's cool and all, but their program still lacks something that Maxwell has. Not quite sure what it is, but their gallery is dull that's for sure.

Wasn't there a rumor 1 or 2 years ago, that Maxwell might get such a feature? Or was it only in the wishlist somewhere?

Maxwell is leading the way in my opinion. You can pile on the glitzy features all you want, but it is the core render engine that is what matters. I agree with Jason. Maxwell's output has a better lighting solution which no amount of extra features can replace.

mw gave me features I never expected when I bought the beta-version...
(Multilight, Simulens, MW Studio, advanced material system, native c4d materials)
..and I never paid a buck again!

Let´s wait and see what mw 2.0 will bring 8)

yes my friend I know Maxwell's quality is incomparable, but the capability to change material in a scene without re-render the image is very very interessting , usefull and saving of time...

but yeah Jason ,bubbaloo ...I know and we all know and see that maxwell output quality is higher level... :D no worries about that

how would it technically be possible to exchange a shiny metal with a rough metal... ?
in real life, the surface properties define how the light scatters off this object differently, thus the image would look different with two different materials
--> for correct lighting ('photorealism'), the picture would have to be re-rendered...

or how would i replace a lambert with a dielectric without re-rendering..

are there examples ? or is just the diffuse map exchanged ?

Great questions! I also find this impossible...At least some of the material properties will be disabled.... For example, can you change a grass material with a grass material with displacement?

Well, even by keeping the material in the same category, let's say a simple rough opaque material, as daedalus already pointed out, how you can change object's colour but you won't get that colour to scatter in the scene...until you don't have a buffer for every single materials that works like a lightsource...the RAM usage would be massive...

That feature sounds really nice,...but I am a MW user...and I will not change that!

Might be that the feature simply works like channels, and you have to select the swappable materials prior to rendering. Anything else seems hard to imagine.

 Cool features (BUT)

It seams to me that every feature they develop is gonna be introduced as a new product

Lets hope NL does not follow the some business model.

JurX , I am a Maxwell user too and since the RC version, and it will not change too... !!

but for me, this kind of innovation must come from NL not from an another compagny.

Nl always brings something new, always push away the limits compare to the others, so, it's why I am sad to see an other compagny take the " place" of NL in term of innovation and novelty.
