D-loaded the demo and I"m finding the texture painting extremely clunky/slow when I load my own maps/stencils. I usually work at 4K at least. Anyone else finding it almost unusable at that res?
It is very slow at both highpoly models and also with highres textures pretty bad compared to what Zbrush is capable of.
I sculpted and painted a quick test now using the included basehead in Mud, it's kinda rough and with poor textures because i have only a old crappy mouse to work with. But this is a screenshot from the Mudbox viewport with hdr lighting, depth of field and tonemapping activated.
Well, at least it's not just me on the slowdown. Disappointing really, I was hoping this could be a replacement for Zbrush and Bodypaint for my texture paiting, but no joy there. Maybe the new Photoshop texture tools will be better......
No it's definately not only you who have trouble with slowdowns in Mud 2009, i feel sorry for all ATI users who wanna run Mudbox because it's not working that well with it, they get black screens, white screens, no interface at all and major slowdowns and brushstroke lags.. what you should take a look at for texturing is 3D-Coat, it's a cheap but great program! i recently purchased a license myself of it.
how is the correct workflow to generate normal/displacement maps in MB2009 ? is there a way to generate those maps from already subdivided/sculpted mesh instead of just from the lowest base mesh ?
(zBrush has the options to delete the lowest subDivLevels before creating displacements and normal maps)
Another vote for 3dCoat. I followed Max's advice and tried it, and bought it. I have not tried sculpting with it at all yet, but it was worth it just for the texture painting capabilities. Way faster than Zbrush, Mudbox, or Bodypaint IMO.
does 3d coat automatically generate correct holes if you dig thru all material to the other side ?
with zBrush and MudBox, the geometry is simple intersecting then ..
this should work if 3d coat is voxel-based .. with symmetry tools, this could give some damn nice forms ! --> Jotero !
