Yes, saving HDR and converting to LDR in PS would help.

Looks more like straightforward gradient banding to me. 32bit might help, but I suspect you may still need to add a bit of noise in PS to get rid of it.

Thanks for the info Brett, googled the problem and it was suggested to add noise to thr red channel for best results, can i avoid the banding at all? Even rendering to a 32 bit format it sticks out a lot, then i only want the background to look smooth not the model.

Cheers

Brett, do you mean saving HDR and converting it down to 8 still has banding?

Brett, here's how:

Maybe you don't have this option checked in PS?

Just as an addition to Tom's tip, which should solve the issue:

For a greyscale gradient there are only 256 shades of grey in 24 bit... this is clearly not enough for smooth gradients, and therefore you'll see that kind of gradients on a lot of occasions, even with real digicam images!

My shout guys

Look no gradient banding on this one..

Tom when you add noise, is it to the whole image, or just to the red channel?

Cheers

No, I do not add noise. The procedure is:

1) Set HDR file as render output.
2) Open HDR in PS
3) Image / Mode > 8 Bits/Channel

Other than PS, you can consider Qtpfsqui as a free option for tonemapping HDR images:

P.S. Thanks for the beers!
