Looks more like straightforward gradient banding to me. 32bit might help, but I suspect you may still need to add a bit of noise in PS to get rid of it.
Thanks for the info Brett, googled the problem and it was suggested to add noise to thr red channel for best results, can i avoid the banding at all? Even rendering to a 32 bit format it sticks out a lot, then i only want the background to look smooth not the model.
Hi Tom, yeah I can still see it in my hdr render, not as bad as my first jpg but its still noticeable to me, maybe i look at computer screens too long...
Just as an addition to Tom's tip, which should solve the issue:
For a greyscale gradient there are only 256 shades of grey in 24 bit... this is clearly not enough for smooth gradients, and therefore you'll see that kind of gradients on a lot of occasions, even with real digicam images!
