I hear you, I really do. It would be great to have more options and as I said, posting this request in the wish list is absolutely appropriate and reasonable.
Believe me, I do not do any renderings that are photorealistic. I agree with your estimation of how beautiful they can be but how useless at the same time when it comes to communicating a design. That is why I am suggesting, at least until such a feature can be implemented, there are alternatives. I purposely did not mention C4D or 3D Max in my reply because I agree that they are overkill for what you are needing, but I focus on post-processing via Photoshop. The combination of Rhino and M~R put together in Photoshop can be very good.
I just believe in using the right tool for the job, or collection of tools. If you are an industrial designer I am sure you are aware of Alias Studio and the vast array of presentation options it opens to you, but then again, it is very expensive.
I support your wish for this feature but understand why N~L is not focused on it (maybe they are, I certainly don't know) in the meantime I am more than happy to suggest alternate ways by which you and your students can accomplish what you want.
