Hi all, been a while since I last posted some of my work…(not everything I do gets taken to a finished level--it's mostly for design-related discussions)

Here's something I'm working on at the office: it's a restaurant in a LEED certified mill complex that my firm is doing. There isn't a tenant for the restaurant space yet, so I was given (fairly) free reign as far as the design goes--still more to do (lighting and ceiling in particular-never mind the floating tables/bar).

lit with physical sky and sunlight (i've been lazy), modeled in Rhino3/4, chairs/stools courtesy of Evermotion.

Are you satisfied with the Evermotion models?
Soon I'm going to buy a package with textures + models, and Evermotion looks promising!

I think the evermotion models are great--the wires are even nice looking! The only problem I had this time (and I think this was a rhino translation problem) was that some of the parts (legs and footrest) were shifted out of place and I had to move them into position. The barstool also had some extra parts with it, or at least it seemed like they were extra…rhino 3 didn't like the barstool (it was giving me invalid meshes) but rhino 4 had no problems. These are from volume one so I bet the later volumes are even better.

looks like a great start here!
Personally I would not choose those large and heavy chairs for such a room. I think they are not working well in a room like this with much daylight from both sides, but this might look different when you chose materials and render it...

the light from both sides is not correct--there's supposed to be a ceiling and the only available daylight will come from the storefront system. I just kept the ceiling out (it's not designed yet) and rendered using physical sky because I haven't finished the lighting design yet…though it would be a cool space if the light was actually like that…hmmm

I think maybe the dining chairs will look appropriate once I finish modeling. Too busy on other projects at the moment to finish this, possibly will get time this weekend.

very small update (only had about an hour this weekend)

started work on the banquette seating/lighting--I think I need to revise my emitter material (and possibly the geometry) since the 18" long tubes seem to be putting out more light than the 4' long tubes (upper left corner of the banquette)

very quick update…decided to change the banquette wall to an exposed-stud wall (possibly from reclaimed wood which may prove to be an interesting material problem) the panels (GWB or plywood) are hung with metal clips and I'm thinking of attaching mirrors to the wall, expanding the experience of the view a bit (there's some great river views)

more to come since it seems I'll actually have time to work on this now

overnight render (i love my new computer!), still need to work on the bar area, overall lighting/ceiling design, possibly add tablecloths to low tables, dinnerware…then I can move on to the materials

Here's a very quick and dirty comp (don't quite have the camera settings the same) that I did this morning for a client meeting.

I let the render cook for 12hrs, reached 18SL…still no materials and the lights are just placeholders until I decide on the actual fixture. I've got another one cooking that's from the opposite VP, will update again in 12hrs or so…

as an aside, does anyone have any good tricks for maintaining the window reflections when doing a comp using maxwell and Photoshop?? I really could have used a reflection pass this morning

I'd like to know that too.

If you render out the Object ID channel, you can use that to create a transparency map for your windows.
