Beautiful render of a beautiful machine.
One question though.....
Is copper used for the parts on the lower left? If, so, why copper? Its very soft. If not copper, what metal is it?
Its always nice to see such a nice piece of work as this.

Thomas,

I've wanted to say this on here for a while now. You are clearly the studio-setup master :) I love the website too ... the attention to detail in all of your models and renders is quite amazing

@ glypticmax: A couple of reasons:
  1. I like the color :)
  2. Copper is a material used for sleeve bearings (actually that would be bronze, but it is a copper alloy). The valve plate experiences no substantial pressure. The barrel idly rotates and there are no great loads developing on it (all the load is transferred to the sockets of the ball joints). As a matter of fact during operation there is a thin film of oil developing between the valve plate and and the barrel, since the the center of the valve plate (barely distinguishable) is steel; creating a microscopic offset.
Having said that, yes, the valve plate could have been made of steel too (but a copper alloy is not entirely out of the question)
