I am about to purchase a new render/cad machine and was looking for some advise on the cpu. I was looking at AMD x2 4200 AM2 around $500 AUS, however the conroes seem to be available now...E6600 for the same price.

I think the Conroes, even the duo 2 E6600 pretty much outperform the Athlon 64 FX-62 & 64 X2 5000+, so go figure an X2 4200 AM2. Pretty easy choice methinks, happy days seem to be back for intel...

lol, i'm sure that as soon as we all run out and spend all the cash we have left on the new intel duo's, AMD will announce an even faster proc., i think they enjoy screwing with us

Aren't the Conroes heavy on electricity useage? And hot too? Pretty important stuff if you're looking at a render-box..........Yes my OC'd 4800's are woefully out of date now... ... but so will anyting you can buy within six months.
Quad-core Athlons will be along soon and Intel will once again be chasing the game.......I don't think it's really that important, just get what you need to do your job effectively and don't lose too much sleep over the latest go-faster stripes.......playing catchup twice a year is a mugs game.

I think Intel's fixed the TDP probs with the new core 2 duos, they are running from 65-75 W, so no problems there...

I just ordered my e6600 2.4 Ghz Conroe (and a new mainboard, graphic cards, 2gb RAM ...) , I am really looking forward to it!

I was about to order an AMDx2 4200 on Saturday, however I read about the conroe, so I am happy I held off. Have now ordered E6600, coolmaster case, quadro fx1300. The processor works out about the same price.
