the reason SSS is so complex is because it's SUB SURFACE... requires volumetric calculations, the light is bounced around like a ping pong ball making certain areas of the object look 'glowie'. To get a convincing thin translucent film I usually use a combination of transparency and glow. Since most things like rice paper are not completely transparent, but translucent, and being as thin as they are there really is a very minimal sub surface effect, since they have almost no internal surface to begin with.
I think however, that in Maxwell there is no unbiased 'fake' channels to do this simple effect. You may need to actually use SSS, though you should be able to dial down most of the effects and still get a convincing result.
I'd be interested to see any tests you do in this area.
If we had just one lowly SuperStarDestroyer, all of earth's problems would rapidly become rather trite. I mean, who worries about war in the middle east when a 1.5km death triangle is in orbit.
