Does anyone have a way to mask textures using ambient occlusion? I can think of some really long winded ways involving screen mapping but I would rather avoid that. I also want to avoid applying AO filters in post.

any package that can bake (AO) maps onto geometry would be suitable.

so you would re-import the geometry with UVs unwrapped being on channel0, which will be your masking channel.
