In MaxwellV1.7 we had an INTENSITY slider together with the traditional Exposure settings, that were usefull to adjust the intensity of an MXI file that could be used in an emiter material.
Now in V2.7 that slider is missing. Anyway a new similar multiplier was added in the Material editor.

I wonder if that new muliplier is replacing the old one.

I am asking because I was using old MXI files that were enhaced using the old settings, and they looked too dark in the new materials.

Yes, it's the same multiplier. The difference comes from improved luminance calibration in V2 which was a little bit off in V1.
