HDRI + Emitters and how it affects render time

I'm curious how the combination of the two affects rendering time. I had a render today that I needed to use two emitters but I also used HDR studio for the rest of the lighting. In the past, emitters were much slower than HDRI but nothing has been mentioned about it in quite a few iterations...I think you guys mentioned that the speed difference between HDRI vs emitters has changed as the program gets more efficient, but i could be wrong. I have three questions about this:
1. See above...Does HDRI vs emitters still affect render speed?
2. Does using a combo of emitters and HDRI have negative effects vs using just one or the other?
3. If you're using the two in combo, does the amount of emitters have an affect on render time (example...would using an HDRI plus 5 emitters be slower than using an HDRI plus 1 emitter?
