Limited number of colours in Material ID output

Hi,
I've found that my scenes generate Material ID renders that only use two or three colours, making them virtually useless for post-processing.

Does anyone know what dictates how much variation there will be? I remember reading somewhere that material names have something to do with it, but I've been careful to keep them as unique names. Any ideas exactly what aspect of the name affects the colour? (eg the first few characters, for example?)

I've posted about it in the MAYA sub-forum.
I use the override settings in the global attributes.
So infinite colors.

Thanks - could you explain a bit more what you mean? What do you override?

I use maya but I guess it's the same overall:
In the material global attributes, there's an option to override the automatic material-id color and choose any color you want.
