When zoomed in very close with the default camera, objects begin to "dance" to and fro in the Fire window. Looks like the camera can't focus or something?

I always thought that was Maxwell gathering samples when the camera was out of focus, I cant confirm it though.
What about manually focusing

Manual focus in the default camera is disabled, only auto focus can be chosen for it. The f-stop of the default camera can not be manipulated, because all settings are disabled for it. See a still of the blurry "fire dance" :)

If you position three cubes in an equilateral triangle and then zoom in, you get a "fire dance" not quite unlike Capoeira :D

bograt is right, this is just the early stages of the determination of the lens blur. I've noticed it too but it calms down and gets more and more refined as the SL goes up.
