Do MXMs need to reside on the boot drive?

I've placed a load of textures and MXMs on an internal hard drive and can't find them in the Material Browser - is that to be expected?

Mac Pro early 2008; 8 core 3.2GHz; OS 10.7.5
32 GbRAM
