Caustic SL

Hi all,

sorry if this has been covered before, but this is a question on SL when using caustics.

A SL of around 18 covers off the noise on most imagery that we've been rendering.
However, if you leave a render with certain caustic effects going in to the mid 20's, the next set of caustics appear (see attached). Very nice.

The problem is this, at SL18 the noise level is good with no fireflies but we're not getting in to the really nice, deeper caustics, but if we let the render go in to the 20's the fireflies appear and then this takes many SL's to smooth out (the simple torus attached is on 27 and still very noisy).

How are you guys working with this?
Do you save out a SL 18 image and then let the render tick over and see if the next level of caustics refine out? If not, you're still good to go with the image at SL18?

Cheers,

Steve

I usually do a few test renders to determine what S.L. I am happy with. Those types of multiple bounce caustics will take a long time, and when they first start appearing, they can be really messy.

cool, cheers.

Is there a typical SL that you find the multiple bounce caustics appear?

Cheers

No. I can't say for sure.
