Alembic support

I've been using Alembic in Maya 2012 and I have to say it is pretty amazing with it's speed and simple interoperability with other programs. I would *love* to see Maxwell load an Alembic file into Studio...the format supports hair and particles as well as regular geometry (and all the animation is baked in). If the host apps support hair and particles in their alembic exporter...then it's not something Maxwell would have to support on a per App basis (I'm kind of guessing here - but if Studio can read hair and particle info in an Alembic file..it shouldn't really matter what app it originated in).

Anyway, seems like a match made in heaven so I hoping somebody at NL is looking into it.

best,

Greg

I agree, Alembic support would be pretty useful in the future. I think SPI & ILM are trying to get people to use Alembic rather than OBJ as the default polygon model file format. OBJ is very, very stable but it quite a few years old now and the support of hair and particles is a welcome update to an application independent file format. Helge has also written an import / export for Softimage http://vimeo.com/32136520 and I'm sure there's one for Max as well.

Yes, I would love to see this too.
