Hair Shader

Hello,

I been experimenting with the new hair primitive in V2.6 almost non-stop since it was released and I haven't been able to come up with a shader that produces anything close to looking realistic like the image on the V2.6 hair feature page. Mapping a gradient onto channel 0 of the texture gives the diffuse results I want but I have been unable to get the sheen of real hair. Adding a reflection layer doesn't seem to nelp help.Any suggestions how to produce anisitropic reflections? A simple example mxm to study would also helpful. Thank-you for any assistance.

I don't know if it will look good but adding a coating seems reasonable as hair is usually a bit greasy.

For that blond hair I used just the gold wizard and then desatured the colors a bit, that was all. The anisotropic effects is already there because of the accurate reflections and nr of hairs. But you can also use the anisotropic param for even stronger effect if you want.

Mihai:

Thank-you so much. I've tried using the wizard and had some success but now I know I'm on the right track. I've also found that setting the base and tip thickness is really important as is the hair count as you say. Thanks again.
