protect geometry problem....once again.

What is the deal with randomly being unable to export geo out of maxwell render with it telling me it's protected?

I created the geo in maya, exported to an mxs (made sure protect geometry was not selected) brought in maxwell to work with, and now need to export as an obj but once again maxwell won't let me. what is the deal with this? for the past 4 or 5 years this issue has popped up numerous times for me as well as others on this forum. What causes maxwell to think geo is protected when it is not?

See this

there is a tick box option to protect your geometry in the Maxwell plugin of your native 3D application just untick that and all should
be ok

thanks teabag, but this is already the case for me. I double checked to make sure I have it unchecked when i export.

I missed the unchecked part in your previous post - sorry :( - Hopefully someone can answer your question be interesting
to know why your geometry is still protected.

We would need more info on the steps in this case, you imported this MXS into another scene? Or did you import another MXS into this one?

it was a new scene....here are the steps below. It doesn't do it with every file, it's just random.

1. Export out of Maya as .mxs (making sure protect geo was turned off)
2. create new scene in maxwell studio
3. import .mxs into studio
4. work with object for a while, setting up materials and lighting
5. try to export object as a .obj
6. projected geo error.

What happens if you skip step 4 and try to export right after opening the scene output by Maya? Does it tell you that the geometry is protected?

The problem is, the only time I ever need to export geo is after I've adjusted the angle of something in Maxwell Studio. I'll just need it for positioning reference to model things in maya.

Having said that, it looks like it works fine if i try to export right after I import the object. I have a bottle that I exported from maya and imported into maxwell and setup a scene around and did some test renders. That was about an hour ago and I just now tried to export it an I got the protected geo error. After I read your post, I created a new scene, imported the exact some .mxs (which was exported from maya) and was able to export out of studio as a .obj perfectly fine.

So somehow, within an hour of working with the model it apparently went from exporting fine to being protected.

Just curious, if you have Maya, why do you even need to open Studio? Maya / Maxwell plugin should provide everything and more than Studio.

The main reason is maya doesn't have render region. I tried working in maya using the plugin but SO much time got wasted by not having render region. Alot of my renders are at 6000px and you just can't work on an image like that without render region. Other than that, overall, I just like working in studio for rendering better than in Maya. Screen layout/UI is obviously more tailored to rendering since that's all it's being used for.
