V2.5 is now almost one year old.
Is there any clue as to what we can expect for V3 ?
Thanks ,

Don't know about V3, but 2.6 is RAD.

Some things that might be new to the next release...
1. Use of GPU and CPU power.
2. Faster SSS
3. Faster MW Fire
4. Useful displacement
5. Material converter from (not to...) a range of renderers (Mental Ray, Vray, Standard MAX renderer, C4D etc...)
Nice wishlist...don't you think?

My list would be something like:
1) Better physical sky system, including stars, moon, and clouds... but I would not complain about volumetric atmosphere/lighting as well.
2) Stronger material system including: more useful and stack-able coatings, support for procedural textures and Vector based maps/masks (preferably via Substances), and much more (I could go on for quite some while but the first two are the tops on my list).
3) full Caustics within a reasonable timeframe... and dispersion would be nice if possible too.
Best,
Jason.

My personal list was:
- immediate Fire-Update on Lighting Changes without re-voxeling (either native HDR or Emitters)
One should not have to use a crazy expensive 3rd party product to get this feature.
- full Ptex Support
- faster and easier to control SSS
- even better Normal-Maps and Hi Poly Support
It should open the option to completely go without Displacement for Still Imagery also with highly detailed
content created inside Sculpting Applications. There's simply no logical reason to use Displacement for Stills...
- more Control about the appearance of Dof and Bokeh (and way faster rendering of images with shallow Dof!)
- Support for radial motion Blur
- direct import for layered >8Bit .psd's, option to set an Image-Editor to send maps to from the Material Editor

Apart from the new hair system, are there any hints you can give us Brian?

What I hope to see
1. Speed improvments
2. Dirt shaders and procedurals
3. away to do animations without having to saving out a mxi for each frame.
4. Ambient occlusion pass
5. Less noise when using displacment.

I wish I could...

V3?
If then, I have another option to choose :
1. Max subscription renewal
2. iPad 3 (maybe it worth)
3. Maxwell upgrade

i think if v3 is the next big thing i have another option to choose too... vray
after almost 7 years maxwell is still lacking some major features like procedurals, dirt, usable (faster!) displacement, fur, two sided materials, a more robust network rendering, faster caustics and scattering, a material converter and maybe a grass shader...
(and more speed / less noise on interiors, metals etc. )

I also going more and more to use Octane Render these days for projects. Only if I have to go over my 3GB vram I use Maxwell or need more as 12 million polies. But as soon as Octane supports proxies or instancing there will be less reason to go with Maxwell for my kind of work. I can plug in another GPU and have doubled speed. No large renderfarm, no plugin costs.

And it will very soon have SSS and a fully integrated Max plugin

Yes I'm in the testing group. It will be a very nice addition. I think I can say this.
