Crash when trying to open MXI

All of a sudden, Maxwell seems to be unable to process any MXI texture files.

When i try to open a MXI file, Maxwell (maxwell.exe) crashes instantly. At this points the files seems to have been loaded just fine, as I get a short glimpse of it before the window goes away. Trying to import the MXI into Photoshop yields a standard file format error message. The 3dsmax plugin shows no error messages, but is unable to view the texture and also crashes 3dsmax when clicking 'show in viewport'.

I actually first realised that there is a problem after importing the candle flame material from the online library, which includes a 'flamebright.mxi'. But I since tried a number of other MXIs and none of them seem to work.

This issue has cropped up in earlier threads but does not seem to have been resolved there (see http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/view ... 97&t=35091 and http://www.maxwellrender.com/forum/view ... 97&t=34071).

Any help on this would be appreciated!

Have you recently updated your graphics card drivers or Windows OS? An update to these two things led me to the same problem once, and reverting back to before the update fixed the issue. Could be worth a try.

Well, Windows automatically installs updates all the time. But since I cannot say for sure when MXIs last worked, I don't want to just blindly revert system updates until the problem goes away.

I have now manually updated the display drivers and even re-installed Maxwell. Sadly, no change.

I did some more tests and, as it turns out, the problem is not with all MXIs. Only MXI textures show these symptoms. Rendering output saved as a MXI file seem to work fine.

What's more, if I open one of these rendered MXIs and right after that, a MXI textures that would normally cause Maxwell to crash, no crash occurs and the image shows up fine. If I try to open the very same MXI texture first, Maxwell crashes. To me this seems to signify a bug.

But at least I now have a workaround to open MXI textures and simply save them to HDR so that I can use them in 3dsmax and Photoshop. Nevertheless, I think this is something NextLimit should look into...
