Laser lines - lights

I'm looking to have a laser positioning light within a Maxwell scene (I'm actually building the scene in Softimage XSI 2012, if that matters).

The above demo is what I achieved with some compositing, the face and device is rendered with Maxwell, the lights rendered with Mental Ray (actually texture maps in this case). I initially tried using several grids as light emitters that intersect the model, but wasn't able to get the results I wanted (deadline approached and I took the easy way out). But for future versions, I'd like to get more in the scene so that proper reflections are accounted for.

I saw the image before it went down, and the only way I know of achieving a result like that is to use emitters in a very long dark narrow box with slits in the end. This will make the light rays as parallel as possible. AFAIK Maxwell is not capable of producing laser light. Using a parabolic dish with a spherical emitter in the focal point can produce a direct beam of light, but not a line of light as you need.
