Dear all
I would like to share my thoughts with you and to find out maybe I am missing something
I am using MR for almost 2 years, (I love the program) I am in the field of Exhibition/Museum design.
Regarding my workflow I am using 2 computers one as a node.
Each project I need to provide 6-8 renders (I have two every week some times more)
Usually I am doing it during the night time.
The renders are bottleneck
Now here is my question:
Is it normal that each render will take 2-3hour?
The max resolution I can afford is 15-17 SL
And the size of the hard print is like postcard 10X15 cm
I am attaching sample of render I did yesterday, is it the maximum I can get from my hardware?
My two PC are
Windows 7 64-Bit SP1
Intel Core i7 CPU 920 @ 2.67GHz
12.0 GB RAM
NVIDIA Quadro FX 1800

Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Intel Core2 Quad CPU Q6600 @ 2.40GHz
8.0 GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 8600 GT

Please let me know if it is normal or am I missing something.
I consider adding one more computer as a node (I7 2600) will it be significant?

I'm still a novice with MR myself but share the following which I am now finding:

1. I find external renders much quicker to reach a satisfactory level than internal renders. An exterior can be done in a few hours whereas I did some interiors recently that run into 30-35 hours and still had a lot of noise,

2. The number and type of lights, materials and their sub layers do affect the render time and amount of noise,

3. Using environment to supplement artificial lighting can also increase render times and noise levels,

4. The size of the output resolution affects render time, ie. a 640x 480 image renders quicker than one at say 4000 x 3000

5. FWIW, your image looks presentable to me.

As mbbga1 mentions render time is not solely based on hardware. There are modeling and material factors that will increase noise and render time. Do you have your scene optimized... no emitters under glass, no white materials 255.....I don't model interior shots with multilight anymore but from your machine specs I would think that your image would get to SL 15 in a reasonable time frame... 1-2 hours.

I created this so you had a one stop information for do's and dont's while useing maxwell this may help.

For this scene, more CPU will definitely help a lot. Your i7 is nice, but that Core2 Quad is a little antiquated. Another i7 would definitely do well for you. Your scenes are usually quite complex (materials, geometry, and especially lighting) so there's only a little to be gained from optimization in my opinion.

A tip that I often repeat is to always render your final image to a very high resolution. As high as your RAM will allow. At high resolution, noise becomes less of a factor. For example, render a scene at 1280x720 and the same scene again at 3840x2160 (double HD res) for the same amount of time. Open the larger one and downsize it to 1280x720 and compare the images.

i consider to add two I7 2600 PC now i need to find the money for that

Will the downsized version look cleaner than the small one?
