Lighting small, metal objects?

Hello All:

I've been a lurker mostly but have been using Maxwell since version 1.5. I'm working on an object that pretty flat but with lots of small, rounded objects perfect for picking up reflections. A majority of the objects are varieties of metal - most downloaded from the MXM gallery. Anyways, I'm trying to light this thing and am not getting great results. I've played with a variety of HDRI maps and nothing is getting the result I'm looking for. I even tried building a mock light box for the object. It's still kinda flat. I guess lighting thing this would be most a kin to lighting metal jewelry. Can any one offer any suggestions?

Thanks!

Al

Could you post any images of the sorts of results you've been getting?

Yes, I can post something. I have been playing with just a few emitters in front of the object, put the object in a photographer's light box, and use an HDRI as an environment and am getting better results. Still, I am amazed at the results some people here get when lighting jewelry.

This probably isn't a direct correlation to what you're doing, but perhaps this will give you an idea of at least one method.
