no matter how much I try, mxm displacements are always "straight" and not natural when I zoom on the image. I need to render an interior with a nice carpet like vray's carpets so it will look like a real model and not like a displaced texture. is there a way to do it? (i work with maya btw) ?

You should be able to convert Maya's hair/fur to polygons and then map those and render them with Maxwell. I'm not aware of any
other method to get it done and still get a realistic result.

There are many different carpet types. A reference picture would help.

-create hair with painteffects option on
-modify/convert painteffects to polygons

that`s it - no tricks needed

with hide painteffecs option activated, you can even keep the constructionhistory alive!
so your hairsystem is still working while you get converted polyhair on the fly...

i suggest you have to learn the basic hair-parameters first...
for testing purposes start with a simple sphere...apply hair...hit play or better interactive playback for realtime feedback,
so you can tweak some hair attributes and watch the results...if your are satisfied with the result...modify/convert PE to polygons...

to speed up your workflow: hide PE-strokes in your perspview, this will result in a haircurve display only, which is rel. fast!

hope this helps!

if you are using a plane, all haircurves will face Y-up and result in spikes...
you have to shake/animate/move the plane to get some motion...or add some influence fields...or play with turbulence attr...

otherwise no motion will happen, because the only force applied is gravity, and the hairsystem doesn`t know in which direction to bend!
