Brushed MEtal Material Help

I am trying to come up with a brushed metal material but not sure how to go about it. I've looked at all of the brushed metal materials in the gallery, but honestly none of them actually work. They might work for far away shots, but for shots that are closeups, it is obvious that they are wrongly created.

I'm not sure sure whether I need to use bump map or anisotropy or both. Theoretically they bump should create the anisotropic look of the material, but I find that the bump mapping doesn't look correct when trying to use it for these micro facets...but if I only use anisotropy, it looks pretty flat.

I've been messing around all day and just can't find something that works for closeups...any advice or ideas from you guys??

Something I've tried before with some success is to use a "brushed map" (basically B&W texture showing the brushed "marks") in the angle slot... if you use a softened version for a slight bump you can get decent results.

Best,
Jason.

Thought I'd give you can update I spent some more time working on this material and came up with something that I think works pretty well. There are still some things I'd like to add to this (slight randomness in the scratches), but for my needs right now, it's good enough. The thing that I needed to do, which I wasn't before, was putting an inverted brushed metal map in the roughness slot. Thinking about it, the grooves would be a little rough, while the areas which remain unscratched will keep their shiny metal characteristics.

There is a slight bump map, but it is very slight. I think when doing micro-scratches like this, a bump map is not the way to go. I've never had any good results trying that. Anyways, a sample render below.

looks good... definitely better than plain anisotropy.

Best,
Jason

It looks very good indeed.
Like you say, introduce some randomness in the scratches, and perhaps some imperfections will make it look perfect.
Have you tried with a normal map instead of the bump map?

Chris

Mate you certainly did nail it!

I would say the scratches could be a little longer, they seem to be short / stop / start.
