I want to take a hi def jpg and use it for image based lighting in my scene. I loaded the image in Maxwell and saved it as a .mxi but it crashes maxwell. It won't let me save it as an .hdr. What am I doing wrong? Any help would be appreciated

I think it's a bug in the current release. You can also try saving to .exr or using Photoshop to convert your image. A word of caution though, no matter how high resolution, an 8 bit jpeg will not create good results for image based lighting.

I can do it here without problems.
Check if it is saved as progressive or greyscale or something like that that could lead to a problem. Make it RGB and Baseline "standard" to be safe.

Thanks for the feedback. You were right, 8 bit won't work. In Photoshop I upped to 32bit and then saved it as an .exr/
Works OK now.
