Lighting and SS Glass

Hi all,

I am trying to render a light fixture I am designing, a wall sconce to be precise.

I have modeled a light bulb, and the "shade" for the fixture is a piece of sculpted, frosted or "milky" glass. To get the milky effect I have put a little bit of SSS, and the roughness is up slightly to create a little frosting.

Now if I render without my light bulb the glass looks OK. If I turn on my light bulb I get some great light on the wall (not in way of the glass) but through the glass I see the black outline of my bulb. The glass doesn't look lit at all - I have to wait until SL 16+ to start seeing a little of the glass being lit, and still the light bulb looks black... Doesn't make any sense to me.

Could anyone suggest anything to try?

Tom.

I recall seeing an image slightly like this before. Under Render Options -> Illumination & Caustics are Illumination, Refl. Caustics, and Refr. Caustics, all set to "Both"?

If so, could you post a screen shot of your mxm settings, the SSS in particular.

Sure thing. Here are the settings - note that in this instance I have grabbed the settings from the Rhino/Maxwell plugin window and not the material editor, although I am assuming the results are the same!

Well - It seems like I fixed my problem. It was a combination of settings that got me to this weird behavior. I now have what I was after, and it is starting to look great (although boy is SSS slow...) If I get it right I'll post the material to the MXM Gallery

Do you know what the combo of settings was that was causing the issue?
