What Kinds of Materials are Needed?

Is variety of existing types important, or not? Or is is more important to break new ground?

In other words:

If there is already in the library a textured, layered wrapping paper with red paisley and metallic gold edges, is a blue paper with silver flowers of much value?

Yes -- every new material is helpful.

or

No -- from the first we could easily make the second. Try to do something really new.

I would guess a mix of both would be good, as humans are by nature lazy they want everything served so simple materials created helps them shave off a couple of minutes here and there. :)
Complex materials are always good for many reasons.
