Import question

I render jewelry so if anyone is knowledgeable in this department I appreciate your help.

My question is this, when I import a model it is HUGE should I be rendering my jewelry at this size or shrinking it down?? Does this affect the render in any way? And if resizing smaller is necessary what size??

Thanks for any help :P

What 3D modelling program are you using? Maxwell requires correct scale if you want realistic results. Scale affects lighting, camera settings, etc..

You have to model your objects to scale, check the scale you've set in your main application, the plugin should take care of exporting it to the right scale as mxs. Same replies here :P

I am using a cad program called 3design and everything is scaled in MM as I design.

Oh and I am using maxwell studio there is no plug in for me :/ so again I don't know what to scale down too? As you see in the pic my ring seems to be scaled to 20 meters? I'm assuming each grid square is 5 meters? Also in the pic I found a spot where I think I can scale all imported objects to the correct scale once someone tells me what exactly that size is...?

So my question still stands, what are the numbers I need to scale down too?

Thanks for the help fellas

Hi Jay, if you start playing around with scaling your ring you will have renders that look strange.

Your best bet is to refine your meshes where you can. I took a quick look at the website of your software and did not find an explanation of whether it is a surface based modeler(Rhino, or Alias), solid based (SolidWorks) or polygonal (Modo). In Rhino at least you can refine meshes a bit and lower your poly count in other ways by using instances/blocks (duplicate versions of objects that do not take up memory).

Also check other areas to reduce memory... are you using multilight? if so try using hdri's to light your scenes. Or tell us a bit about how/what your software is and maybe some other folks around here can chime in with suggestions.

this might work, or let me know I will figure it out in the weekend, if you can post
or pm this file of 3d software will be easy

http://rapidshare.com/files/416907868/tr1.rar

or
try your import setting at 0.01 or 0.001, open the file I am posting in maxwell it is a ring with 20.00 mm inside diameter you have 2 camera views selet one you like.
import YOUR 3d file in here and compare the sizes if it matches then you have the right import setup in your maxwell from your 3d , if not try set your import at a diffrent decimal eg converting mm to meters. Note this is a mm scale setting & this is what I recomend will be much easier to work with. Till you figure out export set up in your 3d this is the easy solution
I am thinking
hope this helps,

Thank you Phill very helpful information thank you!!

When I scaled my ring down to .001 my ring fit almost perfectly inside yours. and when I bumped it up to .0012 it sat pretty evenly on your ring but I'm guessing the difference is pretty insignificant at that size. Thank you for your help again Phil this is exactly what I needed!! :D

Only problem I am having now is that once I import that to maxwell studio it's so small that i cant zoom in that close? In the picture you see how close I can get to the ring and if I select on one of your cameras I can zoom in on the ring and see it normally. But how do I place a camera if I cant get close enough in the first place...?

ok 1st step is fine, note: the ring inside diameter is what you have to match as
this is what I made 20mm exact. so you are close

now you zoom your ring (not mine, hide it) till you see the ring as you need, make NEW camera but with 50 to 100mm lense as you prefer (mine from rhino come in with 50mm lense
& I change after as I need) and auto or pointe focus as you prefer,

make your new camera and post to show where is your imported camera
hope this helps

If you can't zoom in anymore with Alt+right mouse button because the ring has gotten too small, select it, rightclick in the viewport>Center selection. This will zoom your view so you see the ring framed in the viewport. Now you can create a new camera.

Sorry, just re read your post... obviously thought you were having troubles importing large poly files... not LARGE scaled objects... read more type less :). Glad philip helped!!!

Cary- It's the thought that counts ;)

Phil and Mihai- that is exactly the info I needed! Thank you for your help!

And Phil .0012-.0013 are the numbers that closely match my inner diameter to yours, so I'm assuming this is the size I should be resizing my rings to even though that is clearly bigger than the inside diameter of most engagement rings?
Thanks again :P :P

Jay,
the 20mm example I gave is just to find out the import scale setting, to compare your 20mm ring you had made.
now that you know your import scale is 0.0012 to 0.0013 you keep this import scale every time you import FROM YOUR 3d software to to maxwell. no matter what size your ring you are making the scale will be very close to what you need.
if there was a plugin avilable for your 3d you will not need all this setup, this is the pracitcal setup.

I am thinking out loud, maxwell imports everyting in meters so the correct scale from mm to meter should be 0.001 but I need to experiment a bit more.
I hope this helps,
-Philip
