no success with IES files & tube or wall wash fixtures

Hello,
I have no problem using IES files for point lights but when I try to apply a IES file for a wall washer (based on a tube light) or long fluorescent tube (like a 4' tube) I get strange, incorrect results.
Should I be using a source shape other than a small sphere in these cases? Any one having success with IES files and these kinds of lamps/fixtures?
