Question about using IBL over emitters with SSS

I am not clear of the reason why using IBL gives better/quicker results over using emitters, especially when it comes to lighting SSS. Does anybody an insight as to why such a difference? I've been trying to work with SSS a lot lately for some of my product shots and if I am lighting an object which has SSS (ESPECIALLY if it's back lit) emitters just don't work well...sometimes not at all.
Even though I've been using IBL for my SSS, I am not sure the reasoning why it works better. Is this something that is just currently a shortcoming of Maxwell Render, and will eventually be fixed as we go through the versions? Or, due to the way is calculated, does it mean the difference will always be there? I'm trying to understand a tiny bit about the behind the scenes difference.
