Hi there, new to maxwell, so very basic question
If I want to make a textured plastic material. Do I add bump to both the base and clear coat layers.
I know a displacement is global. But with a bump does everything need it applying to be phyically correct?
many thanks in advance

I would have to say that you can apply the bump to any layer you want, as long as it looks the way you want it to look like it's okay. If that's on the baselayer or on your shiny clearcoat layer doesn't matter that much.
Try them both and see which works the best, if one fails, try the other, if the other fails try something different.

There is also a bump slot at the top of the material that will affect the whole material.

No problem.
Don't forget, you can also use weight maps to define the areas of bump per layer. Displacement though doesn't work this way. It is only globally applied, no matter what layer it is added to.
